The traditional Internet Advertising system may have had its day. Clickthru figures as low as 1% are being quoted, which looks very unfavourable when compared with pay per click and affiliate programs.
On the upside, the CPM (cost per thousand) of banners is so low that for many businesses they can still provide an inexpensive means of attracting visitors.
Banner exchanges take 2 people away from your website for every one they bring to it. Give them a miss.
A very convenient and inexpensive alternative to banners is Google Adwords. This enables you to create simple, text only adverts that target specific keywords, languages and audiences on the Google search engine for $15 CPM or less. The system is flexible, allowing you to run several campaigns targetting multiple keywords or phrases with a high degree of control. An estimated projection of traffic over a 1 day, 1 week and 1 month is provided after you have selected some keywords. Adwords are generally online within a few minutes of submission, and once accepted, you can fine tune your adwords keywords and description almost in realtime in order to improve clickthru.

I've always viewed banners as a necessary evil. It seems crazy that companies who spend hundreds or even thousands of pounds developing an online corporate image, wreck it by presenting banners in the middle of their masthead over which they have little or no control. Even more absurd is the fact that those spending the most on design are doing the greatest damage to the appearance of their website and distracting visitors from what they came for.
